4月20日 Blazing SaddlesLindsey and I have decided to punish ourselves again this year and bike 100 miles in the "Blazing Saddles" bike ride. It is a fundraiser for the Payden Memorial Foundation, an organization that helps kids with cancer. It is the organizations biggest fundraiser and as such, we are looking for pledges to sponsor us for the ride. If you are so interested in sponsoring us with your tax-deductible contribution, please follow the link below: http://blazingsaddles.blazingsaddles.dojiggy.com/LefsaEater Thanks! 4月10日 Ancestry.comI started building our family tree on Ancestry.com and have been completel sucked in. It's addictive to just keep adding names and see where things go. With a subsciption the site will take a name you put in and search historical records, it's pretty cool. Found the actual passenger list from 1928 when my Grandma's family came over from Norway. Even has a picture of the ship itself. Link to the "Anderson Family Tree":
3月29日 FolderShareThis is a cool little app. For anyone with more than one computer, there is always the problem of keeping track of which files are stored where. With this app, you can set up a shared folder that keeps in synch with folders on other computers. So create a doc on one computer, and it automatically is created on the other computer as well. It works through the internet, so if you have a connection, it automatically does it's thing. And you can get to the synchronized files from any computer on the internet by using the web site. It's still in beta, but what isn't these dayz. 3月25日 I just saw it on CNN.com: The little HillaryThe Clintons were on CNN today! Here is the link to the online video, they are about a minute into the clip. http://us.cnn.com/video/?/video/politics/2008/03/25/moos.video.hit.parade.cnn Here is a link to the entire video for the song mentioned in the CNN story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXRvfQXt9YM 3月24日 Curling in BozemanIt's happening, it's all happening... Curling has come to Bozeman! There is a group of people starting a curling club here in the Bozone. Play will start here in a couple weeks for the inaugural season, a spring 5-week league. Lindsey and I are all signed up and ready to go. We'll be playing at the fairgrounds on the ice there. Not the ideal setup for curling but it's a start. There should be about 20 people for the spring league, so again a good start. I've only curled a couple times, once when I was living in Fargo and once a few months ago when I was in Duluth with Ian. We're no Duluth Curling Club...yet. I'm pretty much relying on my Scandinavian and North Dakota heritage to carry me through. I have an uncle who was part of the winning team at the 2008 USSMCA National Seniors Curling Championship in Bemidji, Minn. recently. So that's something... 3月3日 "Home improvement"Here are a few pics of our home improvement. The tile in the entry way is done and went pretty smoothly. Shower is taking a little longer than thought, mostly because of plumbing, but hopefully won't be drawn out too much! 2月28日 WarmthWe spent a few days down in AZ last week/weekend. It was great to get out of the cold and snow for a few days. No matter how much a person enjoys winter sports, seems like at some time about mid-winter, it just gets old. So a few days of 70 degree weather was just about right. We had one cold, rainy day, which was of course one of they days we chose to golf. But overall can't complain. Chris, Mellissa, and Brookes were down there as well, so it was great to hang out with them for a few days. We hadn't seen Brookes since he started walking so that was fun. That guy is going to be a little hellion. But he's going to be a golfer and a Yankees fan so we're ok. We golfed at The Duke on Friday, the public course that winds through the neighborhood where my folks live. We've played there many times and it's a fun course, pretty wide open, large fairways and greens. But it has got to have the least friendly staff I've ever seen. You walk in the clubhouse, and no one every really greets you. No one really seems to care that you're there. It's pretty much, "Name? Tee time? Paying for one? You're on the tee..." I swear they are like robots. Robots with sticks up their asses...that place takes itself WAY to seriously. There was one bag boy who actually smiled and joked with us. I'm sure he'll fall in line soon. 2月18日 Bracket CreekTook the pooches and skied up Bracket Creek yesterday. Lindsey was working since we are leaving for Phoenix later this week, so she was making up a day. Saturday night I played poker with some fellas, so when Henry stuck his nose in my face on Sunday morning, I wasn't too keen on getting up. But then I couldn't go back to sleep so decided I might as well go try to tire the dogs out. Bracket Creek has got to be one of my favorite cross county ski spots around. No motorized vehicles are allowed which means no snowmobiles. Not that I have anything against sleds, but when skiing it's just nice not to have to deal with them. The trail isn't that heavily used either, so doesn't get packed down. And isn't groomed like some other area trails. So for classic skiing, or more of a back-country x-country ski, it's great. Wouldn't really recommend skate skis on it, but I did see someone with them on this past weekend. And finally, I like it because there are a lot of little side trails. You can really get remote and more than likely not see a soul out there. We've been up there a handful of times this year, and I've always noticed a side trail of the main drag that looked like it kept going up the mountain, but I had heard it actually went back down and looped around back to the beginning. Finally took it this weekend and it was a sweet trail. A bit of a climb at the beginning but then it was just a roller-coasty downhill the rest of the way in the trees. Definitely will be taking that way back from now on. 2月13日 Duke v MarylandJust started watching the Duke/Maryland game tonight. If anyone checks the timestamp of this post, you'll realize the game is already over, but I'm a nerd and recorded it. Anyway, the inspiration for this post is that when the game first started, the camera angle was right from courtside, and the camera was shaking like Arn. Literally the house was rocking. Maybe they used that camera just to show how the place was shaking, but I've never seen that camera angle before. What an incredible place to go see a game. Top of my list for any sporting event would be Duke v NC at Cameron. Next would be any Steelers game at Heinz. And the only reason a game at Yankee stadium isn't up there is because I've already been there. But if it was Yankees v Red Sox, it might bump it up to #2. Anyway, for all you folks just leaving Cameron after the game, please don't call me and tell me who won. 'Preciate that. 2月10日 Skiing Sourdough CanyonX-country skied up Sourdough Canyon today. It was really warm and the snow was wet and sticky, but the BSF nordic team was nice enough to go ahead of us and pack the trail down real nicely...great for us folks on classic skis. Would have been a great day to have skate skis. Add those to our gear shopping list. The real reason for the outing today was that in a few weeks, we have the forest service cabin rented up at Mystic Lake. It's a 10 mile ski into the cabin. So today we went half way up the trail and back so check out the trail and see how long it will take us. Took us about an hour and a half to the half-way point, so will probably take us around 3.5 hours total, since the second 5 miles is steeper. We haven't found any takers yet to go with us, the cabin sleeps 4 and it's just Lindsey and I so far. I guess Henry and Maggie are going to get their own beds. Speaking of the dogs, Maggie wanted me to pass along her version of our outing today: "We only ended up going 10 miles today, I swear these people are the laziest bunch I've ever seen. I mean honestly, I didn't even break a sweat. Wait, dogs don't sweat...you know what I mean. And the snow conditions today...cheesecake. I ran up the mountain about a zillion times looking for some good pow to run back down through. All I got was deep, wet snow. I wish these people would check the snow conditions before we leave the house." 2月7日 Great winter...It's been awhile, but I've got to jot down some of the things we've been doing this winter, because it seems like we've been fitting a lot in and it's been great. The snow has been good, and we've had time to play in/on it which makes it even better. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, telemarking, a new nephew, and a few trips have made for a busy few months! Started with a trip to the farm for Thanksgiving, Christmas in Billings with the family and new nephew Bohdan. After Christmas, a trip to Seattle for a quick vacation. Mix in a few trips to Bridger, a couple trips to Big Sky/Moonlight, and many trips to various x-country trails in the area, things have been good! I'll have to give more detail in the future but for now just wanted to get back on the blogging wagon. Most likely will be falling off soon. More to come... 6月15日 Big Day!Got a big day today, closing on our house! Since we've basically been nomads for the past 6 months, it's going to be great to get into our own place again. Not that we haven't appreciated the hospitality of my folks in AZ and now Megan in Bozeman, but it will just be nice to have a place of our own again. We did the final walk-through last night and the current owners were in the process of moving out. Looked like they still had a LOT of work to do but hopefully will be all out by 11:30 today when we close. I felt for them though, moving is such a pain in the ass. But looked like they had some help, so that is good. And they were just moving across town, so that's better than to a new city or state. We told them if they got crunched for time and wanted to leave the boat, that would be ok. Stay tuned for the house warming party... 6月13日 HikingOne of the great things about being back in Bozeman is the access to all the great hiking around here. Load up the dogs and in 10 minutes or less you're on the trail. Posted some pics of a recent hike up Blackmore trail (or at least it goes to Blackmore Lake and Mt. Blackmore so I'll call it Blackmore trail). Here's a map of the approximate area:
We hiked for a couple hours and eventually got to a point where the snow was really deep and hiking without snowshoes or skis wasn't too much fun. There is some good skiing up there though if you want to hike. We say a few guys coming back down, and last time I was up there I watched some snowboarders. We hiked up Leverich Cayon last weekend. I had never been up there before and it was a sweet trail. At the first top-out area, there is an old mining shaft that has since been filled in. While we were up there, an older fella was there as well and knew his stuff about the old mine and the rusted out equipment that was left behind. He pointed out an old chassis of a Model-T that had been used to haul the cart up out of the shaft. There was also a sign on a nearby tree that marked the "claim". Pretty cool to come across something like that on a random hike. 5月14日 Back in the BozoneAfter a 3 year hiatus, we are back in Bozeman. Today was such a great example of a Bozeman day. Lindsey started her new job today, and I did as I usually do, so the day was consumed by work. But then after work, it was such a nice night. We took the dogs for a run and ended up running up to Spectators where we met the Keehr's and Megan. Sat out on the deck and had a beer, then ran back to the condo. It's so nice to be able to do that stuff again! Funny thing is Jawsh called me earlier and I told him I probably wouldn't be coming to Specs because I was waiting for Lindsey to get home. Then I called him back again and told him again that I wouldn't be coming because we had to submit a counter-offer for a house we're trying to buy. Then Megan showed up and told him that we'd be there shortly with the dogs. Nice.
Anyway, good to be back. We're living with Megan for the time being while we house hunt. We do have an offer in on a place but remains to be seen if we'll get it. We already put an offer in on another place and on the same day a separate offer came in. Guess it was about the same price but it was cash, so they won. Honestly who has that much cash? And as I mentioned Lindsey started her job today in Livingston. She's bringing home a packcheck!! WOO HOO!! :) Going good so far anyway.
Cripes, sitting here watching the Suns vs. Spurs. I'm a fan of the Suns and really can't stand the Spurs. But how do the Suns expect to ever get past the second round of the playoffs if they can't play defense? I mean honestly, the Spurs shooters are getting WIDE OPEN jump shots from the 3-point line. The offense can only take them so far. I swear these NBA players should go back and run through some drills at a high school practice or something. This is a bounce pass, this is a chest pass, this is defensive shuffle, this is how to set a pick...
Anyway... 3月29日 Tour de CureSo yes I did finish the Tour de Cure bike ride. Thank you to everyone who through some cash in the ring and sponsored me, I got a really sweet XL cotton white tshirt out of the deal! If anyone thinks they are entitled to part of the shirt let me know and I'll send you a chunk.
The ride went really well, except for two parts. The first part was the mountain road climb that I didn't realize would be quite that long or quite that steep. Sorry for making Lindsey and my folks wait so long for me at the top! Honestly though when that girl about the size of my thumb passed me on the way up, I did kick it in gear and stayed on her wheel for a few yards. But then let her go so she could have her moment. Good thing was that we got to come back down on the same road so that made up for some of it. The second part that didn't go well was about 5 miles from the finish when I got a flat tire. It was right near a road crossing where some policemen were stopping traffic. They were very enthusiastic about watching me change my flat. At least they didn't make any jokes about my bike shorts. Got the flat changes and about 2 miles down the road, got another flat. Only had one extra tube with me so basically hobbled into the finish line from there. So the ending wasn't great, but at least I made the full 100K.
Then we went to Cracker Barrel and I ate a whole homestyle sampler platter or whatever it's called. Good times! Also posted some pictures in the picture viewer, I look a bit tired in the pic from the top of that mountain... 3月10日 Kids, wear your helmetsLindsey had a bit of an accident on her bike last week. Her front wheel slipped through a grate in the road as we were going about 20mph down the street. She is ok, no broken bones. But some serious road rash and a deeply bruised hip. Her helmet took the rest of the impact.

Quote My Live Search Maps collection 2月28日 UltimateSo I signed up for an Ultimate Frisbee league, and our first game was last night. I played a bit in college, but all just pickup games with no real structure. I got my first taste of competitive Ultimate last night. I realized very quickly that even though I exercise fairly often, running or biking a few miles a day does not prepare you for sprinting every few seconds, as is required by the game. I was very tired, very quickly. I also realized that in order to really play well, one needs an accurate forehand toss (or huck) as well as a backhand. My forehand is very weak, so I tried to make up for it in general hustle, high-fives, and lack of knowledge of the rules.
It was a fun game though, and it helped that we won 12-11 on the hard cap (not sure exactly what that means yet). I am damn sore today though, 10 years ago when I played last I don't remember being this sore. I'm just hoping a week is enought time to recover for the next round of action. It seems like a fun group of players, lots of folks know each other even on different teams and seems like a good community of people. I did notice some folks bringing adult beverages to the game, anytime you can do that it has to be a good time. Also heard mention of something like 60 kegs drank at a recent Ultimate tournament. Hey, I'm just here to help. Even if I'm just a role player, I can empty and roll a keg with the best of them. |
